5G + 8K Live Broadcast at the World Ultra-HD Video (4K/8K) Industry Conference

The brief

The 2019 World Ultra-HD Video (4K/8K) Industry Development Conference in Guangzhou is the industry's own gathering on ultra-high-definition video, so the broadcast had to meet the highest bar in the room: a genuine 5G + 8K live feed, including a live 8K view of the riverside by the Canton Tower. Delivered with China Telecom, the production had to demonstrate exactly the technology the conference exists to advance, holding true 8K across both the conference stage and a live outdoor scenic shot.

What we did

We delivered the conference as a live 5G + 8K broadcast, deploying 8K cameras on the conference stage and at a riverside position by the Canton Tower for a live 8K view of the cityscape. The 8K signals were encoded in real time and carried live over a 5G link provided with China Telecom, with a technical director cutting the program feed and engineers holding redundant encoding and transport paths ready throughout. The same feed was down-converted simultaneously to 4K and HD so every channel received the best picture it could show. Every camera position and every 5G link was tested before broadcast — the standing bar is high when the audience is the ultra-HD industry itself.

The result

A stable 5G + 8K live broadcast delivered at the industry's own ultra-HD conference, including a genuine live 8K view of the riverside by the Canton Tower. The 8K coverage brought the conference stage and the outdoor cityscape into one ultra-high-definition program, while simultaneous 4K and HD down-conversion served every screen. The 8K masters were retained for on-demand and large-format display use. Delivered with China Telecom, the broadcast put 5G + 8K to work in front of the exact audience shaping the ultra-HD standard.
