A 5G + 8K Remote Ensemble Concert Streamed Live Across Cities

The brief

China Telecom set out to show what 5G could do for live music: a remote-ensemble concert with musicians in different cities performing together in real time, streamed in genuine 8K. The challenge sat in the timing. For players in separate locations to perform as one, the link between sites had to carry synchronised signal with latency low enough that the ensemble stayed together — while every camera still delivered a full 8K picture. This was as much a network demonstration as a broadcast.

What we did

We delivered the concert as a live 5G + 8K production, deploying 8K cameras at each performance site and carrying the signals live over 5G. A remote-sync engineer worked with the transport team to keep the sites locked together with low enough latency for the musicians to play in time across cities, while a technical director cut a single program feed from the multiple locations. The 8K signals were encoded in real time, with engineers holding redundant encoding and transport paths ready throughout. Every site, every camera and every 5G link was tested and rehearsed before the performance, because a live joined ensemble gives you no way to fix timing after the fact.

The result

A genuine remote-ensemble concert held together over 5G — musicians in different cities playing as one, streamed live in real 8K. Multi-site 8K coverage brought each location into a single ultra-high-definition program, and the 8K masters were retained for on-demand use. Delivered with China Telecom, the concert demonstrated that 5G could carry both the synchronisation a live ensemble needs and the picture quality of a full 8K broadcast at the same time — a clear showcase of what the network makes possible for live performance.
