5G + 8K Ultra-HD Live Streaming at the Beijing Horticultural Expo

The brief

The 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition (Expo 2019) needed a live broadcast that could carry the colour and detail of its gardens and pavilions in genuine 8K, streamed live over 5G. Working in partnership with China Telecom, the production had to move a full 8K signal off an outdoor expo site without a fixed fibre run to every position — the kind of open, sprawling venue where 5G transport earns its place. The picture had to hold true 8K across greenery, water and architecture from the first cue onward.

What we did

We delivered the expo coverage as a live 5G + 8K ultra-high-definition broadcast, deploying 8K cameras across the gardens and pavilions. The 8K signals were encoded in real time and carried live over a 5G link provided in partnership with China Telecom, with a technical director cutting the program feed and engineers holding redundant encoding and transport paths ready throughout. The same feed was down-converted simultaneously to 4K and HD so every channel received the best picture it could show. Every camera position and every 5G link was tested across the open expo grounds before broadcast, because an outdoor venue of this size stretches an 8K-over-5G chain to its limits.

The result

A stable 5G-carried 8K broadcast that brought the horticultural expo's gardens, water features and pavilions to viewers in genuine ultra-high definition. Multi-camera 8K coverage captured the venue's colour and detail, while simultaneous 4K and HD down-conversion served every screen. The 8K masters were retained for on-demand and large-format display use. Delivered in partnership with China Telecom, the broadcast showed how 5G transport lets a full 8K production move freely across a large open venue rather than being tied to fixed cabling.
